Past Exhibits C. Lynn Tegenfeldt August 5-28, 2010 Opening Reception on First Friday: August 6, 5:00-9:00pm Artist Reception: Saturday, August 21, 5:00-9:00pm ![]() The next exhibit at Gallery 255 showcases new work by local abstract expressionist artist C.Lynn Tegenfeldt. Ms. Tegenfedlt’s new body of work is an exciting collection of color on canvas. Going back to her art origins of photography, C.Lynn starts with an original digital photograph and then deconstructs the image by mixing the color channels in a digital computer program. She extracts the hardness of the line by blending the pixels. She calls this process her inner GUERRILLA. The manipulated image becomes her sketch for her painting. From one “sketch” she paints several paintings with variations in color and composition creating a progression of large format paintings. This present body of work is a progression from an art show Ms. Tegenfeldt had with David Rivas in 2006 at the Ventura Artist Union Gallery titled “Clash of Colors”. All of the new pieces, which are variations on a common thread, were painted with oil on canvas and are large in format. Sandra McCullough July 9 - July 31, 2010 ![]() Gallery 255 will be exhibiting new work by Sandra McCullough one of the resident artists of the Sea Breeze Art Studios which she also founded in 2004. Ms. McCullough’s new work is a series of oil paintings. She has developed a unique surface of burlap and textured plaster on top of wood panel boxes. Her palette is in shades of pink and orange that is reminiscent of sherbet. One of the intrigues of this body of work is the juxtaposition of physical raw ingredients of wood, burlap and plaster to the sumptuous use of oil paint color. "Impressions" Stacie Logue June 10 - July 3 2010 Opening Reception Saturday June 12, 2010 5-8pm First Friday July 2, 2010 5-8pm ![]() Gallery 255 will be exhibiting new work by Stacie Logue one of the resident artists of Sea Breeze Art Studios. Ms. Logue’s new work is a series of ceramic plaques. She has found a way to blend her love of textiles with clay. After discovering clay in college, she received a bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in ceramic art from Cal State Los Angeles. She has also worked many years in the apparel industry and most recently as a costumer. While looking for inspiration she started pressing burlap and lace in to slabs of clay to create textures. Then draping the clay over different forms she made the clay fold like fabric. Ms. Logue has developed a visual vocabulary in ceramics that is unique and recognizable. "Unknown Quantities" Vonder Gray May 13 – June 5, 2010 Opening Reception, Saturday, May 15 5:00 – 8:00 pm First Friday June 7, 2010 5:00 – 9:00 pm ![]() "Earth & Sky" Juried Art Exhibit April 9 - May 8, 2010 Opening Reception Friday April 16, 2010 5-8m First Friday May 7, 2010 5-8pm “Earth & Sky” is theme specific to any imagery that supports the ideology of Earth Day. While living in Sonoma County she graduated from Sonoma State University, working mainly in color and design. ![]() Julie now lives at the beach in Ventura, teaches watercolor classes at Sea Breeze Art Studios, travels and paints as much as possible. Teaching watercolor, Julie says, is just about the most fun thing she has done. It is inspiring to watch total beginner students discover their creative side and get lost in their painting. Doing art helps to see things in a different way adding value and dimension to life. Parshall Terry "The Way of the Brush" Ink Painting & Chinese Calligraphy January 21 - February 13, 2010 ![]() "Colors Galore" Prints by Deslys E. Robinson November 12 - December 12, 2009 ![]() Ms. Robinson who resides during the winter months in Bakersfield, also resides in Santa Barbara during the summer. While in Santa Barbara, she works on her printmaking in her studio at Sea Breeze Art Studios located in the art district on Laurel Street Ventura. “Colors Galore” will be an exhibit of Ms. Robinson’s monotypes created over the years. Artist’s Statement Colors Galore My first love in the visual arts has always been color. When I discovered printmaking (primarily monotypes) in the late eighties, I knew that I was home! Although at one time I did large abstract expressionist canvasses, the colors I wished to convey always eluded me. Time and motion seem intertwined to me, but alas, I am awed by the thought of atoms swirling and colliding, always in motion and yet seemingly static. Could this be another way of saying that color bursts upon us in seeming disarray? Or is this merely an illusion of a new dimension? At any rate, though my epiphany occurred in the late eighties, I’m still hard at work at my print making which I continue to adore. Artist’s Bio It has been said of Deslys that even as a three year old child she had a mania for arranging dresses and shoes in matching colors, because they would be prettier that way. She recalls that she wanted to be a dancer, but being an inventor would be fine. Though shoe polish had been invented she tried to reinvent it. As she was cooking up her “invention” a small fire broke out in her bedroom which taught Deslys to reconsider the business of inventing. Deslys who resides in the winter months in Bakersfield, also resides in Santa Barbara during the summer. She is very active in the Central Valley Art scene which she claims is very active and rewarding. Petroglyphs in her art have been an influence, but then so have all manner of other objects such as feathers, shells, shoes, serapes, etc., have also been influential. Folk Art from near and far has informed some of her designs. Deslys claims that the act of occasionally pulling a beautiful print while working at her press measures up to one of those rare moments in life when one experiences ecstasy. Moore May 22 - June 28, 2008 Moore’s current work re-interprets needlework methods into wire and other alternative materials. Lisa asks: "What do Spirographs, afghans, the orbits of planets, string art, and diatoms have in common? Centric patterns compatible with linear representations. Points plotted and woven together. Influencing this body of work has been the surfing quantum physicist Garrett Lisi’s Theory of Everything. He recently reconstructed color versions of a representation of E8 in the Lie Group. Upon seeing it rendered, I could visualize so many familiar structures and geometries that I lost count of them. My pieces have also arisen by re-interpreting needlework methods into wire and other alternative materials, as well as making gestural correlations with images of diatoms, the single-celled matter of phytoplankton. I looked at a diagram for making Tenerife/pillow lace designs and suddenly recognized a diatom that had been photographed under a microscope. Moved by recent events in the world, Diehl began to explore his responses through plastic mediums, and they will be shown together with some of his photographs and drawings. The Salon Exhibit Featuring All Resident Artists November 29 – December 22, 2007 As the days grow shorter and we approach the Winter Solstice, Sea Breeze Art Gallery is winding up 2007 with our annual "Salon Exhibit: a group show of all the Sea Breeze Resident Artists." Each artist has a section of wall to exhibit their work in a salon style. We hope to encourage you with our pricing for purchasing holiday gifts... or to start your own art collection! We will be hosting three receptions during this busy month to help you fit one of them into your holiday schedule! November 2 through 24, 2007 Juried Exhibit: 3rd Annual "Dia de los Muertos" This show was juried by Arturo Rivas, a local metal sculptor who specializes in Dia De Los Muertos artwork. Rivas also has a display of his work at Sea Breeze. (see below) Local artist Stacie Logue has been the creative director of Sea Breeze Art Gallery’s Dia De Los Muertos Celebration and Juried Exhibit for the past three years. With the help of gallery owner/founder Sandra McCullough, Logue decided to create an art experience around the holiday that would include the community outside of the resident artists. It is the one of two options a year that the gallery allows outside artists to display in their space. DIA DE LOS MUERTOS MASKS The third grade students in Jock Scott's classroom at Blanche Reynolds School have experienced the wonder of having their faces encased in plaster bandages for over 30 minutes so that they could hold the image of their faces in their own hands. Artist Laurie Pegg-Scott welcomed the student's interest and vulnerability to open themselves to the challenge of this process. When we opened ourselves to something out of our comfort zone there is a true change to learn something about ourselves and about others. These masks are modeled after traditional Day of the Dead mask designs from Mexico. This activity was done as a part of a multicultural studies unit within the social studies curriculum. Laurie Pegg-Scott '07 Students: Matthew Dettloff, Kristina Verduzco, Kayla Abbe, Jock Scott, Maria Castro, Jacob Harrington, Tommy McNairy, Hannah Rau, Kailey Ortmann, Megan Kane, Ryan Lee, Adrian Munoz, Jason Gaona, Ray Culbertson, Brian Jones, Jaden Rabago, Steven McDonald, Ariel Alvarado, Kiah Farquhar, Nikko Angeles, Kasie Spencer, and Bethany Sykes. About DIA DE LOS MUERTOS: It is believed the holiday is during the time of year when the veil between the earthly world & the heavenly plane is thinnest and our departed loved ones are able to visit. While the name indicates death: Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) it is truly a celebration of life. It is a beautiful way to honor our friends and family who have passed. September 20 through October 27, 2007 Linda Jordan "Mother & Child: Intimate by Nature" Artist’s Statement I have had many blessings in my life but the one that stands out over and above them all is the experience I have had as the mother to my children. It has been the one relationship in my life that has been the most fulfilling, the most rewarding, and the one that has given my life the most meaning. I had both my children when being pregnant was considered a not so “pretty” thing. What inspires me the most in creating my maternity portraits today is my desire to change that image forever. Being pregnant is the time in a woman’s life that I see as the essence of femininity. It is when we are the most sensual, the most spiritual and the most aware of life itself. Pregnant women deserve to be honored so much more than our society allows. Through my work I hope for a greater understanding and appreciation of what it means to be a woman, capable of bringing new life to this world. By creating images that reflect the absolute beauty and wonder of pregnancy, I hope to bring a new regard and respect to women during their physical and spiritual journey into motherhood. Stacie Logue "Moon Dance" Logue’s current work conveys a special connection to and respect for our planet. She uses her artwork as a tool to communicate the importance of stewardship of the Earth by honoring it. Logue notes, “These paintings pay special tribute to our trees, which are such significant players in our ability to have a balanced and beautiful environment.” |
