Sandra McCullough

Artist Statement

This body of work and the subject of its current focus are Horizon Lines which, have a long tradition as the first appearance of the separation between spirit and matter, or, conversely of a coming together of spirit and matter.

I have been creating art for over fifty years and consider it the channel through which my creativity flows.  My art is the result of a process of connecting with my heart -- using the tools of the medium to create a visual explanation for an experience for which there really are no words.

For a long time, realism was my expression. Then I found my authentic voice in minimalist pieces with vibrant color.

While living in Santa Fe, New Mexico for over 10 years I exclusively painted (realistic) landscapes. At the College of Santa Fe, I studied printmaking where I began to print and paint from the inside out.

Biography

Ms. McCullough has been creating art for over 50 years. With an adventurous personality, an entrepreneurial sprint and an interesting background, she continues to articulate those assets in her artwork.

Originally from Santa Monica, Ms. McCullough’s parents separated when she was a year old. Since this was during the war, and because her mother could not afford to take care of her, she was fostered out to another family until her mother re-married. Since her step-father was in the air force, she traveled quite a bit as a child and has seen many wonderful and challenging things.

In 1993 she moved from her home and studio of thirty years in Santa Monica, California to Santa Fe, New Mexico to further her artistic career.  While studying at the College of Santa Fe she excelled in printmaking and was a requested participant in many exhibits.  She won Honorable Mention in the New Mexico magazine for her black and white (and partially hand tinted) photograph series of the old and abandoned “Cash Entry Mine”.

In addition to maintaining her full time artist studio and her business as Owner/Founder of Sea Breeze Art Gallery and Studios here in Ventura, she holds a Real Estate Broker’s license in New Mexico and California.

In 2003, she realized she missed the ocean and her family so she picked up and moved back to California. Now in her 60s, Ms. McCullough is living the life she always felt destined to live as a creative individual completely involved with her art.  She started Sea Breeze Art Gallery from the ground up and is successfully building her business and career in the arts.
